In Steinbach, Manitoba, where I spent a good portion of my formative years, alcohol was verboten. As a dry community under the influence (pardon the pun) of the many Mennonite churches in the area, liquor was not able to be served or sold. In 2003, the residents voted to loosen these restrictions. That has made it easier to get a drink when you’re looking for one, but the city’s history has made some of us still a bit skittish about grabbing a drink over at Sawney Beans, even on March 17th.
It’s been said that everyone’s Irish on Saint Patrick’s Day, but some of us just Ain’t Irish Enough.
